The polar bear is the largest terrestrial carnivore in the world and the ice floe is vital to it, as it is its place of hunting, resting and reproduction.
Due to global warming, the sea ice surface is decreasing by about 13.4% per decade. With this reduction, the polar bear’s hunting season is shortened, leading to longer fasting and declining health.
Large carnivores are particularly sensitive to the health of their ecosystems. The attacks on polar bear populations are the first visible signs of a larger-scale threat affecting the Arctic marine ecosystem.
